Event sold out. Online registration closed.

Join the Calgary CEA Young Professionals Group for a presentation and site tour of two of the key infrastructure projects underway on St. George’s Island. This site tour and presentation will provide valuable insight into the technical and construction aspects of these two infrastructure projects. The presenters will provide an overview of both projects, with highlights on technical components of each. A guided site tour, with accompanying short presentation topics from the project teams, will explain and showcase key design elements, constructability items and coordination challenges from these projects.

Zoo Flood Mitigation and Zoo Road Reconstruction Project

The Calgary Zoo was severely impacted by the 2013 floods, incurring substantial physical and financial damage. Recent flood maps show that the Zoo is at risk of near complete inundation during a 1:20 year flood event – meaning regular flooding if this project isn’t completed. Scheduled for completion in late of 2017, The Zoo Flood Mitigation project will protect The Zoo against future flooding, preserving one of Calgary’s key assets.

The project includes flood protection measures such as below-ground sheet pile walls, above-ground berms, and a built-in pumping system. These measures are designed to protect The Zoo up to one metre above the 2013 flood, which was half of a metre above the 1:100 year flood elevation. The project also includes a full reconstruction of Zoo Road with improvement to the grade and sightlines to help all users feel safer and more comfortable, and ensure a safe emergency route across the island.

More information, including a drone video of the project, can be found on the Zoo Flood Mitigation Project Website

12 Street SE Bridge Replacement Project

The existing 12 Street S.E. Bridge spans the Bow River on the south side of St. George’s Island and has been in service since 1908. It has become an important link for vehicles and pedestrian traffic, connecting the island with the community of Inglewood. Due to its advanced age and deteriorated physical condition, the structure is in need of replacement.

Scheduled to open to traffic in the fall of 2017, the new 12 Street bridge will ensure this important link is maintained for the next 100 years. The new structure, which sits on an alignment just west of the existing structure, consists of a curve steel box girders supported on disc bearings and a cast-in-place concrete substructure. The deck will be constructed using full depth precast concrete deck panels and ultra-high performance concrete deck joints, a first for a City of Calgary project. The project scope also includes improvement to the existing road alignment, construction of new pedestrian pathways off the bridge and the safe removal of the existing structure.

More information, including renderings of the bridge, can be found on the 12 Street SE Bridge Replacement Project Website
