Jordan Quick, ISL Engineering and Land Services Ltd.

What does a typical day look like for you?

I don’t have typical days in the way you would think. My days vary depending on the season as well as what projects I’m currently working on. For example, during the winter I’m typically working on design projects and writing proposals. Whereas in the summer, I can usually be found on a construction site completing daily inspections of municipal infrastructure installations.

What’s your favourite thing about working in consulting?

I really enjoy the variety of projects that I work on and the different challenges that come with each project. I’ve found that no two projects are alike; there is always a unique aspect to each one, whether you’re installing underground piping, designing a water treatment plant, or creating and analyzing a model for a municipality underground infrastructure.

What motivates you the most in your job?

The people and overall atmosphere at ISL motivate and drive me on a daily basis to be the best professional I can be. The ISL culture that I have experienced over the last six years have exceeded any and all expectations that I had of working at a consulting firm. I’ve found that having strong relationships with the people you work with is beneficial to your professional career as they are the people that celebrate the victories with you but also support you through the challenges.

Knowing what you know now, what will you tell your younger self?

Don’t be afraid of failure; it’s all part of growing and learning in your career. I've always tried to be honest with myself about mistakes I've made and use them as opportunities to be a better professional tomorrow. You aren't expected to know everything in day one, a lot of knowledge comes from on the job experience. Trust that the collective knowledge of the team around you will see your projects through to success.

What skills and personal qualities have been instrumental in the success you have achieved in consulting?

My passion for learning has driven me to ask questions, both big and small, helping me to grow and gain confidence in the technical aspects of my career. I am also very outgoing, so I am part of various committees and initiatives at ISL and within various industry organizations. This has helped me build a broad professional network. Both of these qualities have and continue to contribute to my growth as a Professional Engineer in the consulting industry.
