About the Opportunity

Our thriving Calgary office is looking to add a talented and enthusiastic Transportation Consultant to join our team. Transportation is an integral part of our professional practice here at Urban Systems and while we don’t aspire to be the biggest, we want to be the best at addressing a range of community-based transportation challenges for all modes throughout Alberta and Western Canada.  We have considerable experience in all aspects of transportation including highways, urban roads, goods movement, transit, active transportation, parking, as well as integrated master transportation plans.  We have extensive in-house capabilities to take transportation projects through the various planning, design and implementation phases.

In this role, you will have the opportunity to support and lead a variety of projects. The successful candidate will be responsible for the following:

  • Delivering exceptional service to our clients by preparing and leading technical analysis for a range of transportation planning and design projects (i.e. transportation master plans, transportation network reviews, integration of alternative modes of transportation including active modes and micromobility, TOD and TOD integration with surrounding land use, etc.);
  • Leading multiple account evaluations, including benefit-cost analysis for transportation projects;
  • Preparing and delivering reports, technical memoranda and presentations for a range of technical and non-technical audiences;
  • Providing support to senior project leaders and acting as a technical lead;
  • Providing support to help lead our growing practice through pattern and trend analysis and testing project hypothesis through conditional assessments;
  • Providing support in our growing transportation services for private and public clients;
  • Working directly with clients within a larger Urban Systems team;
  • Providing mentorship and guidance to junior engineers and planners; and
  • Preparing and managing work plans, schedules and budgets.

Qualifications:

About You

Given the variety of project needs, we will consider candidates with a range of experience, education, and backgrounds.  Typical qualifications would include an undergraduate or graduate degree in Civil Engineering or planning (with emphasis on Transportation Engineering, Planning, or Policy).  For this opportunity, we are looking for a candidate to have 5 years of relevant experience and a proven history of working alongside communities, keeping service and client needs at the forefront.

In addition, the following attributes, skills, and experience are considered a great benefit to this role:

  • Technical knowledge and experience with traffic operational analysis and road safety;
  • Experience with the application of transportation modeling software, which may include Synchro/SimTraffic, Vistro, SIDRA, HCS, Vissim. Emme and Visum;
  • Experience with analyzing large datasets using macros, coding or other data analytic tools would be considered an asset;
  • Experience with multiple account evaluations, including benefit-cost analysis for transportation projects;
  • Experience with conceptual design of highways and urban roadways;
  • Proven project leadership skills with interdisciplinary teams;
  • Ability to think strategically when considering the broader range of services we can offer our clients;
  • Self-starter and motivator who is interested in continuing to develop our external service offerings with existing and new clients;
  • An aptitude for problem solving, researching and analyzing information, and clearly communicating the results both technically and to the public as it relates to transportation assignments;
  • Ability to thrive in a self-directed work environment. You take initiative and continually deliver consistent, high quality work;
  • Passionate about working closely with communities to provide innovative and “out of the box” solutions that fit our clients’ needs;
  • Thrive in a team environment and can be an integrator between disciplines while engaged on several projects at any given time (i.e. great time management and workload balancing skillset); and
