Role Overview

McElhanney Consulting Services Ltd. has an opportunity for a Transportation Designer to join our team in Edmonton, AB. In this role, you will have the opportunity will work collaboratively with our inter-disciplinary team of Engineers, Planners, Landscape Architects and Environmental Scientists to provide innovative and integrated consulting services to our public and private sector clients. The successful candidate will work on both urban and rural assignments that entail road / interchange improvements, road rehabilitation / reconstruction, urban streetscapes (retrofits), LRT and multi-modal transportation.

Responsibilities:

  • Contribute to the cost effective, proper and timely production of transportation engineering designs and drawings that meet all client and approval agency requirements, and design standards
  • Transform preliminary concepts and sketches into engineering designs, plans and drawings based on project requirements, using primarily an AutoCAD / Civil 3D platform, as well as other technical software as needed (e.g. Microstation, InRoads, RoadEng)
  • Coordinate the preparation of documents required for approvals, prepare preliminary and construction cost estimates and tender documents and contracts
  • Communicate and work in an integrated team environment to ensure project schedules, budgets, and quality control standards are achieved and maintained
  • Provide supervision, training and mentorship to junior technical staff.
  • May provide construction supervision and/or administrative duties for transportation and municipal projects

Qualifications:

  • Degree in Civil Engineering or Diploma in Civil Engineering Technology from an accredited university or college
    • 5+ years of experience at the intermediate level
    • 10+ years of experience at the senior level
  • Currently registered, or qualified to register as a Technician / Technologist with ASET, or as an EIT or P.Eng with APEGA
  • Advanced proficiency in AutoCAD and Civil 3D Software is essential; knowledge and experience with MicroStation, InRoads, RoadEng and/or other CAD/Mapping/GIS software is also an asset
  • Understanding of the design guidelines and drafting standards, technical specifications and construction procurement documents for the City of Edmonton and Alberta Transportation.
  • Prior experience working with the City of Edmonton (and City of Calgary) staff and a demonstrated ability to successfully deliver design and tender packages
  • Ability to work independently and also within a busy, high-performing, deadline-oriented team
  • Attention to detail and excellent communication skills (verbal and written)
