Coty Hollinger, HDR Corporation

Tell us about your job. What do you do?

I work for HDR as a Project Coordinator in the Transportation business. For most projects, I work with freight rail clients completing tasks from preliminary and functional planning exercises through to full detailed design and on-site construction inspection and contract administration. Over the past few years, more of my time has been spent on the contract administration and construction supervision roles.

What’s an exciting project that you’re working on?

I am currently developing our survey and construction supervision business in the office I am working at. Part of this role is developing a co-op student program and working with other young professionals to help develop skills in contract administration and GPS surveying, to diversifying the talents among all staff.

What’s your favourite thing about working in consulting?

The wide range of projects and experiences that are available. I came into consulting as a young draftsperson/designer, thinking I wanted to do mechanical work only to discover that construction and civil engineering is really my true calling. Also the variety of people and their experiences that you get to meet and share.

Knowing what you know now, what will you tell your younger self?

Do whatever it is you were doing. I like to think I am one of the fortunate few who, if I had a chance to go back and do anything over again, I would not change anything.

What advice would you give a young person who was considering consulting engineering as a future area of expertise?

I would tell them to keep an open mind and not to be afraid to work within different disciplines and with different project managers. The exciting thing about consulting is how different points of view can lead to even greater success on projects, and that different perspective we all bring from our different backgrounds is the key to to bringing everything together.
