The City of Calgary (The City) identified the need to implement a year round biosolids dewatering solution that supports The City’s strategy to provide diversified beneficial use programs for biosolids produced by The City’s wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs). Beneficial use programs include The City’s new Composting Facility. Therefore, The City constructed a biosolids dewatering facility (Dewatering Building) to dewater digested sludge (biosolids) produced at the existing Bonnybrook WWTP (BBWWTP) located in southeast Calgary.

The Dewatering Building provides:

  • A year round solution for dewatering that supports The City’s strategy to provide diversified beneficial use programs for biosolids.
  • A facility that fits within the constrains and enables the realization of opportunities associated with The City’s existing infrastructure, namely the BBWWTP.
  • An initial capacity to dewater up to 20,000 tonnes of biosolids (as dry solids) per year (t(ds)/y) with the flexibility to increase the dewatering capacity to 30,000 t(ds)/y in the future

Construction and commissioning of the Dewatering Building was completed in September 2017, and full-time operation commenced in November 2017.

This event will feature a short presentation and site tour of this exciting new WWTP facility. The presentation will be provided in the Dewatering Building’s training room. The site tour will present and explore the Dewatering Building’s processes and construction process.
