Join the Calgary CEA Young Professionals Group for an informative session at the Calgary Composting Facility, the largest of its kind in Canada. The City of Calgary (The City) is making progress in reaching its zero waste goal – the City has set a goal to divert 70 percent of landfill waste by 2025, hence, the construction and operation of the Calgary Composting Facility. Construction of the 48402-square-metre (8 football fields) facility began in 2015 and costs $143 million. The facility is made up of three buildings and processes 145,500 metric tons of residential food waste and dewatered biosolids annually. The composting process takes approximately 60 days to process waste into a nutrient rich compost.
The facility produces compost which is sold to local farmers and landscapers. A portion of the compost produced at the facility is available free of charge for community gardens.
This event will feature a short presentation and viewings of the operation of the facility from the windows located inside the building. The informative session location is to be confirmed.
*Please note this does not include entering the operating areas of the facility, therefore, PPE is not required.
